With so much unbound time, I seemed to have discovered a sensory superpower, seeing rapture and poignancy in every transaction, noticing things I never would have when previously hurtling through life's daily activities. It was as though the smell and colour of flowers had intensified. I would hear a violinist from hundreds of metres away and lead the family through the streets to sit and listen. The kids, too, were rapt. Separated from computers and TV, they seemed to have taken on an attention span beyond their age. Hours could slide by like minutes as we listened to a bird tweet or watched a guy make a pizza. I observed our friends' daily routines from a curious distance. Luca would arrive home after work late each night while Marina juggled her own job and Gugli's needs. What gripped me was that their lifestyle mirrored our recent former life, and exposed it as the complete opposite of the magic zone we had fallen into.
